It’s ten o’clock at night. I have done all I can do. I am ready for bed.

I can tell, though, that you are itching to know whether I got it all done or not. At least, I presume so as you’ve read this far. If you are humouring me, you are doing an excellent job ūüôā

  • Get dressed. Yes! I managed to be fully clothed before going to the doctor’s. The doctor doesn’t know how lucky he is.
  • Take oldest one to doctor. Yes!
  • Clean up at home. Especially after smallest one took a lot of time and trouble to smoosh banana into the kitchen floor. Still not enough. I did nothing since the lunchtime post. Yuck.
  • Do a long and tedious work related email. Yes, but it took forever. And I realise I have one equally long one to do tomorrow. So it stays on the list for now. Sigh.
  • Pay that garage bill. At least I know how much I should pay, and I have found the chequebook. Hmm. Done. Just now. But missed the post. Blast it.
  • Do forms for oldest one and middle one’s school trips. And pay. Nope. Will have to be tomorrow.
  • Organise my teaching stuff. Tomorrow.
  • Re-think my teaching plans to include what I learned on an amazing Natal Hypnotherapy study day I just went on. Tomorrow.

It’s been four hours. ¬†What have I accomplished in that time?

Well, it’s not been that bad. I got dressed, for a start. I got Peter to the doctor’s. ¬†I took him to school. ¬†I ironed for 15 minutes exactly (2 shirts, 1 pair of jeans, a baby duvet cover and a scarf. Not bad!) ¬†I spent another 15 minutes dealing with the dishwasher and the mess in the kitchen. ¬†Not enough, but a start.

Then I spent an hour playing with and dressing smallest one. ¬†Delightful. ¬†We even got around to cutting her fingernails. Without a fuss! (Older children, take note. It’s not torture if you relax)

Then we went outside. ¬†She played, and I put up the jubilee bunting. ¬†No, it wasn’t on the to-do list, but I needed to do it this week, the weather was nice, and it meant she could be outside even when I needed to get on. ¬†Admittedly she was quite keen to climb the ladder, but there were sufficient distractions to prevent her getting stubborn about it.

Then I let her watch a little cBeebies while I got the kitchen into a state where eating lunch wasn’t going to be detrimental to our health, cooked lunch and spent a pleasurable half hour.

Now smallest one is upset because it’s quiet time. ¬†What I mean by this is, it’s nap time, but she is adamant that she doesn’t want to sleep. ¬†That’s fine. ¬†She stays in her room, plays or reads on her bed, and she’ll drift off soon enough.

I have managed to get some laundry on since then, and now I am here telling you that I feel like I’ve had a productive morning! ¬†How does the original list tally up, though?

  • Clean up at home. ¬†Especially after smallest one took a lot of time and trouble to smoosh banana into the kitchen floor.¬†Not enough. The floor is still hideously sticky. ¬†And I need to run the dishwasher a second time.
  • Do a long and tedious work related email. No, but I am doing it next.
  • Pay that garage bill. At least I know how much I should pay, and I have found the chequebook.¬†Nope. Must do that today.
  • Do forms for oldest one and middle one’s school trips. ¬†And pay.¬†Nope. Hopefully later.
  • Organise my teaching stuff.¬†Nope. ¬†This might need to wait till tomorrow.
  • Re-think my teaching plans to include what I learned on an amazing Natal Hypnotherapy study day I just went on.¬†Nope. ¬†Another for tomorrow perhaps.
  • Work out how to get the second freezer working. No, but I did measure up and I think it will fit. There’s about 3mm in it. ¬†Will get loved one to help lift it when he gets home.
  • Try to diminish Mount Washmore.¬†I’ve made a start. ¬†As long as I don’t forget it’s there.
  • Rediscover the floor in our bedroom.¬†Nope. ¬†Maybe tonight after kids are in bed?
  • Iron the clothes taking over the biggest wardrobe.¬†Well, I’ve done 15 minutes worth. And I will do more when smallest one isn’t roaming around.
  • Contact 7 couples that I will be teaching next week.¬†Not yet. ¬†Also next on the list.
  • Keep smallest one from misadventures.¬†Yes! So far, anyway.
  • Try to spend time with smallest one in spite of all the above.Yes, yes, yes!

Well, actually I feel like I’ve not done too badly. ¬†I’m going to do all my computer work now while smallest one is in quiet time, followed very swiftly by hurried attempts to mop the banana off the floor before she wakes up. And the rest will have to wait till later.

Of course, this is pretty average for any mum with a working husband and one or more children not yet at school. ¬†And everyone else seems easily able to cope with it. ¬†So can I, sometimes. ¬†But I need motivation sometimes too. ¬†Maybe if I achieve the full list by the end of tomorrow I will treat myself on Friday (pay day in our house). ¬†We’ll see how we go!

Smallest one, 4 days old

I haven’t been taking photos today, so here’s one from the archive, when smallest one wasn’t quite as feisty as she is these days…

I type this in my jim-jams, soon after despatching middle child to kindly neighbour who is taking her to school. ¬† I have smallest one and oldest one still here. ¬†Oldest one needs to see the doctor about a sudden and violent onset of hayfever in about half an hour. ¬†Smallest one as a result can’t go to her music sensory toddler group Hartbeeps¬†(which I recommend if you have any small children; it’s delightful), but hey, that’s the way things go.

Here is a list of what I need to do today.

  • Get dressed!
  • Take oldest one to doctor.
  • Clean up at home. ¬†Especially after smallest one took a lot of time and trouble to smoosh banana into the kitchen floor.
  • Do a long and tedious work related email.
  • Pay that garage bill. At least I know how much I should pay, and I have found the chequebook.

I have managed to get my phone’s timer to work properly, so I will attempt all this with the “You can do anything for 15 minutes” approach mentioned recently.

What Flylady doesn’t tell you is the effect of blogging about being disorganised:

  1. You are more likely to get things done if you tell people about it.
  2. You are likely to take twice as long because you keep reporting back to the blog.

I meant to complete the morning routine in the morning. And it’s no longer morning.


Mind you, I did complete it. This is a significant achievement for me. I think since the start of the year I have successfully done this maybe, um, once or twice. Let’s look at the list again:

Get Dressed to Shoes including Hair/Face, Brush Teeth
Did that before the school run, you’ll be relieved to know

Make Bed
This was quite a challenge because our bedroom is such a mess. Here’s a ‘before’ picture


But a quick, focused tidy got it to this state in under ten minutes.

So I’m quite pleased about that. (The cats were less so, since they like to snuggle under the heaps of rumpled duvet. See the look of dismay on her face)

Swish & Swipe
Right, swish and swipe is a term for ‘swishing’ the toilet into a respectable state, and ‘swiping’ the washbasin. The idea is, you do it every day and then it never gets bad. I have a feeling flylady has never seen what my kids do to the toilet, because if she had, she would allocate more than two minutes per bathroom for this task. As such, I couldn’t bring myself to offer any ‘before’ pics. But here are some nice shiny ‘after’ ones instead.



Empty Dishwasher
In a family of five, we often run the dishwasher twice or three times a day. So not doing this first thing is catastrophic. So I have actually established a habit of always doing this before breakfast. And I generally do eat breakfast eventually. Phew. (oh, I usually refill it too. Otherwise eating your breakfast in last nights scummy leftovers is pretty unpleasant.)

Reboot Laundry (a Load a Day Keeps CHAOS Away)
Yes! I have rebooted! The wash I put on yesterday is now all dry, and folded and sorted. And I put a new load on. See? My halo is almost intact.

Check Your Calendar
And now my halo is broken again. It’s my nephew’s birthday, and with a rather eventful week his birthday presents are still upstairs un-posted. And with sick children I can’t go out and post them today. Or tomorrow, as loved one is away. So his pressie will be at least 4 days late. Sigh

Check Your Control Journal
What’s one of those…? It’s a place to keep your todo lists. Flylady likes to put them in clear plastic wallets and tick stuff off with dry wipe markers. I keep losing the markers. So I stick with the normal to do lists these days. Or without, which makes for more excitement, but not necessarily in a good way. Thankfully, I am sent an email telling me what chores need doing today, so I flick back to that when I need to.

Anyhow, halo intact or not, the morning routine is done at last. Yay!

Now for the ‘during the day’ routine. Flylady does all this on her Mondays:

* What’s For Dinner? (work out what you are going to eat tonight)
* Drink Your Water (not a bad idea)
* Declutter for 15 Minutes (in my case, that really needs to be two hours and fifteen)
* 15 Minutes of Loving Movement (a nice euphemism for exercise)

Monday is also the day for Weekly Home Blessing Hour. An hour dedicated to mopping floors, hoovering, dusting, changing sheets, cleaning windows and mirrors, emptying bins and getting rid of old magazines and newspapers. I am going to revise that to something more manageable. I will mop floors and hoover. I will empty bins. And I won’t do any more because I need to add my own stuff to the list.

1 tidy the hall
2 tidy the lounge
3 tidy smallest one’s bedroom
4 tidy the other rooms in the house.

I’m not expecting to manage the 4th, but if I don’t do the first three I am not going to be able to hoover anywhere at all, so that’s why I need to put them in.

I will report back soon! And if I don’t, please come and check I haven’t been buried in clutter.

Part 2 begins at 10.12am. In the last hour I have managed to:

Refill and run the dishwasher
Have some tea and toast.

I can see it’s going to be a long day. So I have also refilled the kettle and checked on the kids. They even got extra toast.

They are lucky…in this house being ill means curling up and watching cBeebies all day. Good for them to watch so much TV? No. God for me getting on with stuff. Oh yes. Well, maybe.

One discovery I have made is, if I put the timer on this marvellous iPad contraption on, and then get it to tell me stories while I do the chores, the timer switches itself off. I feel a one star rating coming on. Hello, oven timer. I’ll use you instead.

Oh. No. Oven timer has a dud beeper. It will get to zero but no sound will be made.

Can I cope? Flylady relies on 15 minute bursts of activity. ‘You can do anything in fifteen minutes!’ is a good catchphrase. Though I would prefer you don’t think about it too much, or your mind may take you far from housework. My old timer ran out of batteries a couple of weeks ago.

Hmm. This morning routine looks suspiciously like it may stray into the afternoon at this rate.

Time for another cuppa, then, perhaps.

It’s 9.08 in the morning. I now work some Saturdays and generally slob out Sundays to recharge the batteries. So the house is really disgusting. It is my mission to get the place in order today.

I want to see how well I do, so I thought I would make notes. What works? What doesn’t work? Do poorly children get any attention? Well, let’s see…

I am going to be using the good old Flylady approach. That means, morning routine first. It’s worked well in the past. When I have felt less overwhelmed by mess. And had no children at home.

Here is a cut-and-paste of the morning routine I get emailed everyday:

-Get Dressed to Shoes including Hair/Face, Brush Teeth (yup)
– Make Bed (ummm)
-Swish & Swipe (not yet)
-Empty Dishwasher (yes!)
-Reboot Laundry (a Load a Day Keeps CHAOS Away) (only enough that oldest one has dry clothes for today; there is a trail of wet clothes leading from the washing machine to the tumble drier.)
-Check Your Calendar (no, not yet)
-Check Your Control Journal (I don’t have one any more. Oops)

At the time of writing, I have managed two of these. I should have done them all first thing, way before I took oldest one to school. Before breakfast too. (actually, I haven’t had time for breakfast yet…)

So. Part one of the challenge is to complete the morning routine. I will report back! Feel free to take bets on how long I might manage to do all that. And have breakfast.

I write as I am already halfway through my third and last course prior to submitting my entire diploma.

I have 4 1/2 couples (the remaining half is an ex-pat in the Middle East, and I am sincerely hoping we will have the pleasure of his company next time).  All of them seem to be lovely, normal, and game to give everything a try.   This is great news for me and for teaching them. They are like sponges, soaking up everything we cover.  It has been very rewarding for me.

I wonder, though, is this luck or good teaching? ¬†I did do a better job at explaining what’s going on during introductions, as well as explaining how one of the NCT’s prime objectives is informed decision-making and a smooth journey into parenthood. ¬†Maybe they took that on board exactly how I hoped they would.

I also feel much happier with the activities I am doing. ¬†They are neat and tidy, I feel they work well, and I am better organised than I was last time round (something the assessor mentioned in my last course). ¬†Better still, I’m mixing up antenatal and postnatal activities, since it helps to keep a good balance of what’s important. After all, labour is one event, and parenting lasts a lifetime. ¬†Mixing up the activities shows that there is a good balance of content throughout the course. ¬†I’ve heard people complain about not doing enough postnatal stuff if you mix it in, but I’ve been careful to acknowledge what we’ve covered from the original agenda setting exercise at the beginning of the course, and show the items on the list being crossed off from session to session. ¬†It also stops stuff from getting too samey.

Another thing that went down brilliantly was having a decent shared lunch in the middle of the session.  I allocated an hour for lunch, and everybody helped out bringing stuff  and setting up. We had the branch volunteers come and talk to us at the same time, and everyone was getting on like a house on fire РI was even praised for it  on my mid-course evaluation.

It was also really great to see the men getting on so well.  After one coffee break, I had to drag them back inside, they were getting so involved in their conversation.  Wonderful.

I heard from other teachers that an intensive format (the bulk of this course is being taught over two 6-hour Saturdays) can be difficult for bonding, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem here. ¬†Whether it’s down to luck or judgement I’m not sure, but I’m certainly glad things are going so well.

We’ve ranged from easy topics (straightforward labour, practical babycare, safe sleeping) to more challenging ones, and whilst it was clear that subjects such as interventions and caesarean were quite a lot to take in, they still listened, asked questions and kept an open mind right the way through – though they were relieved to go onto some lighter stuff straight after!

I had one negative comment on my evaluation forms, which was that at one point I seemed a little disorganised (my epidural kit had gone missing – I found it shortly afterwards). And no doubt I can be better organised. ¬†But, for now, I know that I’m a lot¬†more organised than last time and the time before, and so I’m happy to keep trying to improve for now. ¬†Who knows? Maybe my next session will be perfectly organised!

All in all, though, I’m delighted with the way this course is going. ¬†I’m really enjoying it, and I also feel like I am making a difference to these people. ¬†It’s exhausting teaching for six hours straight, but I do like the format in spite of that.

I hope I am still this positive after next weeks class. The ex-pat is due to return to the UK this week, although it’s unclear whether he will be able to make time for the course… if he does come, it may upset the balance, I’m just not sure yet! ¬†But I’m not going to worry about that just yet. It will be what it is, and that will be fine.
